Do my crops need humic acid?

We’re always hearing about the latest and greatest new products that are going to boost your yield by X amount.

It all adds up to one thing – science. Make sure you’re doing your research and having a discussion with your trusted advisor. Your local CaroVail representative will be able to lead you in the right direction.

That direction may be – humic acid. Do your crops need humic acid? You bet. What are some of those benefits you’ll be gaining from humic acid?

  • Increased nutrient uptake (phosphorus and micronutrients, especially)
  • Increased root mass
  • Increased soil buffering capacity
  • Improved water holding capacity
  • Improved soil structure
  • Increased cation exchange capacity
  • Increased soil microbial activity
  • Increased shoot growth
  • Increased crop yield and/or quality

But what is humic acid? Humic acids are diverse organic compounds that contain an abundance of functional groups that work together to create important chemical and biological functions.

Ok. Humic acid can do all of this. But how?

Humic acid is attracted to the depletion zone of a plant in the soil. The depletion zone is the area closest to the root of the plant where the root draws it’s nutrients. When humic acid arrives at the root zone, it brings water and nutrients with it. Humic acid acts as a medium to transport these nutrients and water to the plant roots and helps keep them from leaching away.
