Safety First

Given the current March temperatures and snow coverage, it’s hard to believe that Spring if upon us. Since March 20th marked the official first day of Spring, it is a good time on the farm to get tillage and planting equipment ready. As spring inches closer, have you had the opportunity to discuss safety procedures with your team?

At CaroVail, the shops are busy getting equipment ready for spring. Along with these preparations, we also sit down with our operators to go over field operations and equipment procedures, as well as state and local requirements. We emphasize the importance of safety procedures in the field, on the road, on the farm, and at the plants. The use of personal Protective Equipment is another important topic discussed.

Yes, Spring can be a busy time, but please make safety a part of that spring work preparation. Plan a safety meeting for all those that will be involved in any spring work.

Are tillage and planting crews aware of equipment size in transport, are safety pins locked, and has the equipment been serviced recently? Check all moving parts and make sure trucks and all motorized equipment have fire extinguishers on hand. Are hitch pins worn (new ones are cheap insurance)? Does everyone know where they are supposed to be, and are they aware of any potential hazards? Increases in traffic in certain areas, tire air pressures, and other equipment hazards should be monitored and prepared for.

Make sure that breaks are being taken frequently to prevent exhaustion. Planting is the base of the growing season – keeping it safe is the most important aspect to a successful season. Safety First Always!
